The Back Abbey opened in June 2008.

Before The Back Abbey came to life at its original location, the building was little more than four dilapidated walls of a historic structure dating back to the early 1900s with no ceiling, no windows, just potential. Since then, it has been transformed into something truly special.

What began as a passion for bold flavors and exceptional Belgian beer has grown into a culinary, beer, and cocktail destination. Much like our menu, our goal has always been to put a thoughtful, unexpected spin on the familiar, reflecting our love for great food, world class Belgian beers, and well crafted cocktails, all meant to be shared with great company.

The Back Abbey is more than what the words restaurant, bar, or gastropub can express. It is our place and yours a space to gather, discover, and experience the coalescence of taste, culture, and personality.

Over the past few years, we’ve continued to evolve. In 2022, we welcomed our second location at The Colonies Crossroads in Upland California which is now proudly partnered with the world renowned St. Bernardus Brewery in Belgium. This partnership makes our Upland location the third destination in the world, outside of the brewery itself, and the only one in the United States to offer the St. Bernardus’ experience.
